Mercury has a layer of diamond 10 miles thick, NASA spacecraft finds

NASA's MESSENGER mission has revealed that Mercury, the solar system's tiniest planet and the closest to the sun...

Can you imagine the "diamond rush" (nd consequences) that might ensue in our future if Mercury does, indeed, have a ten mile thick layer of diamonds?

According to the article this layer is between the core and the mantle, so
about 400 km below the surface. By the time it becomes remotely plausible
to drill 400 km into Mercury, I am pretty sure we'll be able to synthesize
diamonds of any desired quality, en masse.

Thanks all,
Yes, it is a bit over the top to envision digging down 400 km on an airless red hot (or frigid) planet, but someday in the distant future.. who knows?
I like your gift suggestion, Mario.
