Our guest speaker at the May 9 2025 GAAC meeting will be Mario Motta, newly
returned from Florida with an evening's worth of sharp, colorful
photographs of objects we can't see from Massachusetts, like Centaurus A, a
very busy galaxy indeed, and Omega Centauri, a monster star cluster. This
group will be followed by objects you can't see from the northern
hemisphere, period -- the Tarantula nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud,
for example, and 47 Tucanae, another spectacular star cluster, and lots
more.
The first group includes objects Mario photographed from Naples, Florida
with a Celestron C14 Edge telescope over the past 2 years. They were
featured in the February 2024 Sky and Telescope magazine as a list of
objects to observe from the Winter Star Party in the Keys. The second
group, objects only visible in the southern hemisphere, were imaged by
Adrien Barrajon in New Zealand, and then reprocessed by Mario as part of an
ongoing partnership.
Before Mario's talk we'll be treated to a short presentation by Dwight
Lanpher, roving member-at-large of GAAC and most other New England
astronomy clubs. Dwight will report on the final results of his research
into the current state of stand-alone robotic camera systems.
We hope we'll see you Friday, May 9, at the Lanesville Community Center
https://maps.app.goo.gl/pntHAopkhrjho6XR9 at 8:00 pm, for a memorable
night of southern night-sky showpieces, galaxies and nebulae and star
clusters, and an up-to-date report on the latest astrophoto robots. As
always, there's lots of free parking, and there may well be pie.
Zoom info follows for those who can't attend in person.
