View of Dr Herschel's Forty Feet Telescope at Slough RARE Original C18th
Etching
GBP 22.00

An original and rare late eighteenth century etching.
*Titled 'View of Dr Herschel's Forty Feet Telescope' it depicts a huge
telescope fixed by scaffolding, it's base contained within a wooden shed.
Two figures in eighteen century dress are viewing it to the left.  Printed
very faintly in the lower right margin 'Eastgail sc'. *

*The telescope was constructed in the late 1780s at Observatory House in
Slough, by Sir William Herschel (1738-1822) a German born British
astronomer. Herscel's contribution to the science of astronomy is too great
to detail here however it was the discovery of a previously unknown planet,
afterwards called Uranus, which led to a his rise to fame and his
appointment as Court Astronomer by King George lll.  He was appointed a
Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1820 became the first President of the
Royal Astronomical Society. The giant telescope remained in place until
1840 when it was taken down for safety reasons. *

The etching is printed on laid paper and is very good original condition.
There are two vertical fold lines as published.

I have been unable to locate it's original source, the only other
impression I can find is held in the US Library of Congress but they too do
not know the origin, a later reverse version in held in the Wellcome
Collection.

The sheet measures 20.5 x 26cm.

Postage free in the UK, £2 to mainland Europe and £3 to the USA. Other
destinations with the ebay global shipping service.
