Dear GAACsters,

Here is some news from The Galactic Inquirer, beginning with an extended
deadline for the astronomical science writing contest.  Please spread this
news especially!

News at Winter’s End from The Galactic Inquirer

Having spotted our first crocuses here in Cape Ann, MA, we can now begin to
shuffle off winter’s snowy slumber and welcome the warming liveliness of
springtime.  In this time of profound transitions, both meteorological and
sociological, The Galactic Inquirer has a variety of new pieces worthy of
your perusal.

Deadline for astronomical science writing contest extended to April 15:

*The Galactic Inquirer *is co-hosting a pilot astronomical science writing
contest for high-school students.  As of the March 15 deadline, we have
received submissions from around the world that span multiple writing
genres.  However, we still need more entries to make the contest more
competitive, so we are extending the deadline from March 15 to April 15 …

New article on planet formation:

Oregonian Bill Stride has penned the third introductory article in his
“Sticking Close to Home” series on the Solar System.  This time, he has
focused on the physics of forming planets …

News from recent scientific meetings:

*TGI *co-editor Bill Waller covered both the winter meeting of the American
Astronomical Society (AAS) and the annual meeting of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science  (AAAS).  These two meetings
happened to sample the mood among scientists before and after the
inauguration of Donald Trump and the subsequent gutting of government
agencies.  Bill’s article reflects on these profound changes while
providing scientific highlights from both meetings ...

New paper on the environmental circumstances of intense star-forming
activity in M33:

This research article by Tony D. Weinbeck and William H. Waller deeply
delves into the environmental circumstances associated with the rich
star-forming activity churning in the Triangulum Galaxy (M33).  In
“Multi-Spectral Imagery of the Multi-Phase ISM in M33,” they find that the
giant star-forming regions contain multiple phases of emitting dust grains,
complex organic molecules, and ionized gas – with the emitting dust most
concentrated towards the centers of these giant HII regions.  They also
find compelling evidence for spatial variations in the dust and molecular
gas that are consistent with an overall radial decline in the galaxy’s
elemental abundances …
