Hello: Acadia Astronomical Society (Mt. Desert Island, ME)

Astronomical Society of Northern New England (Kennebunk, ME)
Central Maine Astronomical Society (Whitefield, Lincolnville & Damariscotta)
Downeast Amateur Astronomers (Pembroke, Calais, ME)
Penobscot Valley Star Gazers (Bangor, ME)
Southern Maine Astronomers (Portland, Brunswick, ME)
New Hampshire Astronomical Society
Gloucester Area Astronomy Club (Gloucester, MA)

As many of you know, I don’t believe any forecasts 24 hours out; but unfortunately, there is a preponderance of data that confirms the predicted poor weather expected this coming weekend. Attached find this morning’s forecasts from: Clear Sky Chart, The Weather Channel, Weather Bug, Astropheric, Accuweather and finally Astropheric with three composite NAM, RDSP & GFS Models. Since many of you are planning to come from a distance, regrettably, we are officially cancelling this year’s Maine State Star Party.

However, while Charlie Sawyer concedes Friday night is going to be clouded/rained out; ever the optimist, he is planning a scaled back gathering should the weather clear for Saturday evening (again, acknowledging my 24 hour doubts). So if you will be in the area:

“Let's all get together later Saturday in honor of our Maine State Star Party, at the smaller group fire circle location, set up some telescopes, and hopefully enjoy a night under the stars. We all look forward to this event each year and with all the planning we owe it to ourselves to at least attempt to enjoy some shared MSSP time.

If anyone still wishes to camp out Saturday evening, the fire circle location is still ours for the weekend. (Sunday morning is expected to be clear for packup). I will plan on being there around dinner time or earlier for solar viewing if it clears. There are grills there to cook on so we can still salvage some of the weekend.

If you do decide to come, I look forward to seeing you there, and if anyone named Debbie wants to come, please bring us all umbrellas!!!”

Charlie

If you have questions, you can reach Charlie at (207) 214-4511.  I expect to post a follow-up email next week with some important announcements.

Till then, clear skies,

---Dwight
